Singing Skills Sessions with Jackdaws

Book a specialist session for your school as a twilight CPD session tailored to your schools singing needs. Heavily subsidised costs, reduce the cost even further by inviting other schools to participate in your cluster/ federation/MAT and hosting the session.

Bursaries & Summer School Opportunities with Centre for Young Musicians Taunton

Summer Music Course 2018 at Centre for Young Musicians Taunton

6-10 August, 9am-5pm daily

A fun-filled week of music-making with expert tutors. Bands, orchestra, music technology, singing, junk percussion, and opportunities to improve music performance, skills & music theory. Hugely beneficial for students of GCSE / A Level Music, the CYM Taunton summer course is for instrumentalists and singers aged 10-18, grades 3-8. Age & ability limits are guidelines. Excellent value for the full week at £270, part time also available.

Bursaries for young musicians 2017-18

The Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London has generously allocated bursaries to CYM Taunton for this academic year.  The bursaries, which are assisted places provided under the Guildhall School’s Access Agreement, are intended for students in years 9-13, who are from families who would otherwise be unable to afford the CYMT fees and access the excellent coaching at CYMT.

Opportunities with South West Music School

Young Artist Development Programme

11 students from Somerset in academic year 2017/18 are receiving financial support from the DfE through the Music and Dance scheme to access SWMS Mentoring, Tuition and Workshops. These students are from all across Somerset and range in age from 12 to 19 they are from mixed genre backgrounds, but all are extremely gifted musicians.


Case Studies

Nina – aged 16 from Axbridge

Nina is on the Core programme.  Her main instrument is Trumpet – she has been playing for 2 years and has already achieved grade 7.  Her second instrument is the Tenor Horn which she has been learning for 7 years and achieved grade 6 distinction.

Brandon – aged 13 from Taunton

Brandon is on the Feeder Plus programme.  He has been playing the guitar for 8 years, he is new to SWMS and is also in receipt of a grant to support his tutoring and programme development with SWMS.

Music Workshops with Somerset Music

Is your school having a project day, activities week, cultural day or would just like a different musical experience? Somerset Music offer bespoke music workshops for all age ranges, delivered by an experienced tutor. Groups of varying sizes can be catered for.

All tutors are DBS checked and instruments are provided. Half day (2 1/2 hours) £160 Full day (5 hours) £300

Secondary Music Conference

Friday 9th February 2018 at The Taunton Academy, Taunton

This one day conference is an opportunity to get together with music teachers from across Somerset. The day will feature a mixture of practical sessions, teach meet opportunities, schemes of work discussions and sessions lead by exam board representatives. The range of activities will provide CPD to help all aspects of your music delivery. 

Edexcel, OCR and WJEC Exam Boards will be represented by subject leaders from the respective organisations and will lead sessions to help with GCSE delivery and answer your questions. Practical workshops on offer include singing for KS3 classes, ukulele, resources for choirs, Taiko, making the best use of internet resources and moderation/BTEC open discussions.

Actiontrack Javanese Gamelan Workshops

The next residency enabling young people to take part in playing the Gamelan will be taking place at The Mendip School from 19th-23rd February


On The Record 9/Power through Music

If you know of young people (aged 11-19) interested in writing and recording music who would benefit from the opportunity to work in a professional recording studio then there is still time to get for them to get involved in these projects. Please get in touch to arrange an initial meet-up.
