Summer 2023

N E W S L E T T E R

Welcome to our termly newsletter!

Find out about all the great musical opportunities coming up for young musicians and how you can get involved...

A quick message from the chair of SFS...

The Summer is here! On behalf of Sound Foundation Somerset may I wish everyone the best for a glorious summer of music making, kicked off by our own celebratory events for the King’s Coronation. If you can make it, please get to either The Castle Green or The Vivary Park Bandstand, Taunton on the weekend of 6th & 7th May where Somerset Council and Somerset Music will be managing a series of performances as part of Somerset Council's Coronation Celebration event. There will also be a huge screen at The Castle Green and both Coronation itself and the Windsor Castle Concert will be live streamed.

We are also expecting the process for Music Hub Funding from September 2024 to be announced some time in May. Across the country there are proposals that the infrastructure for hubs reduce from over 100 to just over 40. You can read the proposals and rationale here (https://tinyurl.com/2kzu2p2p) and will notice that the proposal is that Somerset combine with Dorset to form a new hub. This is a radical change for most of the hubs in England and we’ll keep you informed of what happens next.

Good News Stories!

Guildhall Young Artists Taunton celebrates inclusion in prestigious national performing arts network

Guildhall Young Artists Taunton endorsed by Creator of The Glastonbury Festival, Michael Eavis, and Conductor and Artistic Director of Paraorchestra, Charles Hazelwood.

Guildhall Young Artists Taunton, the area’s leading performing arts centre, is delighted to join the Guildhall Young Artists national network of centres, which also includes Centre for Young Musicians, Junior Guildhall, Guildhall Young Artists King’s Cross, Guildhall Young Artists Norwich, and Guildhall Young Artists Online all of which provide training, teaching and support for children and young people wanting to experience performing arts.

Michael Eavis, Creator of The Glastonbury Festival, says:
“This centre is vital if we are to develop the next generation of talent from every background. Young people living in a rural area like Somerset have sometimes had to relocate or travel long distances to obtain high-quality performing arts opportunities, but with Guildhall Young Artists Taunton, I am pleased to say that this is no longer the case – we have now created an opportunity on our doorstep.”
