A quick message from the chair of SFS...

Happy New Year! On behalf of Sound Foundation Somerset may I wish everyone the best for the 22/23 Academic Year.

This year will see change. Somerset will become a Unitary Authority and a new Cultural Plan for the county will be developed. The refreshed National Plan for Music Education was published late in June (https://tinyurl.com/2p87w62d) and as other hubs around the country we await the format for the bidding process and the timeline for implementation.

The plan states that high quality music education is schools consists of:
  • Timetabled curriculum music of at least one hour each week of the school year for key stages 1-3.
  • Access to lessons across a range of instruments, and voice.
  • A school choir and/or vocal ensemble.
  • A school ensemble/band/group.
  • Space for rehearsals and individual practice.
  • A termly school performance.
  • Opportunity to enjoy live performance at least once a year
At SFS we recognise that many schools already manage to accomplish this and for those schools which are on the journey we offer our advice, guidance and support.
