A quick message from the chair of SFS...

"Belated HNY. Here we are in Lockdown 3 and I know that all SFS partners are facing organisational and personal challenges. MEH funding has been confirmed for another financial year. SFS will continue support the infrastructure of local, regional and national partners who have continued to support Somerset's young musicians over the last year. When we emerge from the pandemic, provision will have changed to incorporate new technologies but SFS will still be there promoting all that is good in music for the benefit of our young musicians." - Richard Jones

Creativity also supports the mental health and wellbeing of children and young people, which is needed more than ever at this time.

And right now, for Somerset schools, there is a limited time offer of funding toward their Artsmark journey, when they pledge funds not previously used for creative arts education. Somerset Music - Somerset County Youth Choirs

Following a Summer term of rehearsing online, the county youth choirs were hopeful to get back to some in person rehearsals during the autumn term, but due to the rising Covid level plans had to be changed. After this point we resumed with our Zoom rehearsals throughout the rest of the term and finished with an evening of Festive Fun on Zoom in which the choir members were joined by family and friends. To see what the choir have been doing please visit their Facebook page: www.facebook.com/SCYChoirs
Despite the Show Choir being mainly restricted to working on Zoom we were able to record their voices individually and then recorded the ‘socially distanced’ choreography to 'Grown Up Christmas List'

Learning from home with Live Music Now

Live Music Now (LMN) musicians Harriet Riley and Alex Garden began a 7-week project with pupils at Penrose School in November 2020. With the new lockdown, they have taken their project online, working via MS Teams to continue making music with pupils who are still attending school, and hoping to include pupils learning from home in coming weeks. The project is part of a 2-year Youth Music-funded programme for Somerset special schools. More information on Live Music Now’s current offer for special schools is available here.

Somerset Music's Learning Portal

Somerset Music have created an online music learning portal. This portal provides schools and pupils with a secure and easy to use remote classroom environment.
As well as this Somerset Music have increased the number of musical instruments available for hire to both schools and individuals and increased the number of 1-2-1 music lessons available online for children wishing to take up a musical instrument.
So, if your school is interested in finding out more about our remote “music Classroom” learning portal or you have a pupil who potentially is interested in either joining a choir or orchestra or wishing to learn a new musical instrument then please get in touch with a member of the Somerset Music Team.
